MA28A -- INORGANIC CHEMICALS 1993 UNITED STATED DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE ECONOMIC AND STATISTICS ADMINISTRATION BUREAU OF THE CENSUS Issued August 1994 Inquiries: contact Lissene Hafenrichter phone 301-763-2541 FAX 301-763-7897 SCOPE OF SURVEY - The statistics in this publication were collected on annual form MA28A. This survey consists of all known producers of selected inorganic chemicals in the U.S., approximately 950 establishments. SURVEY METHODOLOGY - Figures for the current year may include estimates for reports not received in time for tabulation. Figures for missing reports are "imputed" based on year-to-year movement shown by reporting firms. Data cells with imputation greater than 19 percent are footnoted. REVISIONS - Data for prior periods may be revised due to corrected data from respondents, including data for reports received too late to include in the original publication. Figures revised by more than 5 percent are footnoted. OBTAINING REPORTS - This report is available electronically through the Census-BEA Electronic Bulletin Board. Information on accessing the bulletin board can be obtained by calling 301-763-1384. It is also available in CENDATA, the Census Bureau's online information service, through DIALOG Information Services, Inc. (800)334-2564. and Compuserve (800)848-8199. For further information about CENDATA contact Customer Services, DUSD, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C. 20233, or call 301-763-2074. To order a FAX copy, call 1-(900)555-2FAX from any touch-tone phone and follow the recorded instructions. There is a charge of $2.50 per minute while ordering. The document will be sent free of charge to the FAX number you designate, anywhere in the U.S. For more information on FAX orders call 301-763-1384, or FAX to 301-763-5550. NEXT SCHEDULED REPORT - The 1994 annual report will be released on or about July 30, 1995. INQUIRIES - Address inquiries to Lissene Hafenrichter, telephone 301-763-2541, FAX 301-763-7897, or write United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, Manufacturing and Construction Division, Washington, D.C. 20233. N.s.k. represents the value of shipments for establishments which did not provide detailed information by type of product. These establishments, typically with less than 10 employees, are not included on the Current Industrial Report (CIR) MA28A mailing panel. The n.s.k. value has been estimated for CIR MA28A based on the rate of change for the reporting establishments applied to the previous years' figure. Table 2. Not specified by kind. r/ Revised by 5 percent or more from previously published figures. (X) Not applicable. a/ 20 percent or more of this item is estimated. (1) Totals include values for industrial inorganic chemicals not specified by kind (n.s.k). N.s.k. represents the value of shipments for establishments which did not provide detailed information by type of product. These establishments, typically with less than 10 employees, are not included on the Current Industrial Report (CIR) MA28A mailing panel. The n.s.k. value has been estimated for CIR MA28A based on the rate of change for the reporting establishments applied to the previous years' figure. (2) Includes quantities liquefied for use, storage, or shipments. (3) Includes quantities later evaporated to dry caustic soda and reported as such. (4) Includes some liquid shipped as interplant transfers to other establishments for further processing to dry forms. (5) Product code 28123 61, "Sodium hydroxide, liquid, 68 to 74%", is combined with product code 28163 65, "Sodium hydroxide liquid, all other", to avoid disclosing figures for individual companies. (6) Include unspecified amounts produced from liquid caustic received from other establishments. (7) Source: U.S. Bureau of Mines. Includes data for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Also includes two months of Frasch sulfur data to conform with propietary data requirements. (8)Includes value of inorganic chemicals shipped by establishments classified in both "manufacturing" and "nonmanufacturing" industries. (9) Detail data for sulfuric acid are contained in Current Industrial Reports Series MA28B(92)-1. (10) Includes anhydrous hydrochloric acid production. Quantity of shipments is 122,223 short tons in 1993 and 179,366 short tons in 1992; value of shipments is $25,983 in 1993 and $28,513 in 1992. Quantity of production is withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual companies. (11) Product code 28194 41, "Hydrochloric acid produced from salt and acid" is combined with product code 28194 47, "Hydrochloric acid byproduct and other" to avoid disclosing figures for individual companies. (12) Product code 28194 65, "Hydroflouric acid technical produced and withdrawn from the system" is combined with product code 28194 71, "Hydroflouric acid anyhydrous produced and withdrawn from the system" to avoid disclosing figures for individual companies. (13) Represents quantities produced only for sale or interplant transfer. (14) Quantity produced excludes quantities consumed in the manufacture of meta-, ortho-, and sequisilicates. Shipments figures include unspecified amounts shipped to other plants for use in manufacturing meta-, ortho-, and sequisilicates. (15) Product code 28199 09, "Other bismuth compounds" excludes bismuth carbonate, which is classified as a medicinal chemical and is out of scope of this survey. (16) Production includes unspecified amounts of hydrogen peroxide produced but not withdrawn from the system. Table 3.
