SUMMARY OF FINDINGS In 1996, total manufacturers' shipments of paint and allied products amounted to $16,408.9 million, an increase of 3.3 percent from the 1995 shipments of $15,889.3 million. Shipments of architectural coatings increased 3.4 percent to $6,194.9 million in 1996 from $5,993.4 million in 1995. Shipments of OEM coatings increased 2.6 percent to $5,459.5 million in 1996 from $5,322.2 million in 1995. Shipments of powder coatings decreased 1.4 percent to $470.8 million in 1996 from $477.7 million in 1995. Shipments of special purpose coatings increased 5.6 percent to $3,240.4 million in 1996 from $3,069.2 million in 1995. Shipments of miscellaneous allied paint products increased .6 percent to $1,514.1 million in 1996 from $1,504.0 million in 1995. Table 1. These estimates were developed by increasing the product class totals shown in Table 2 by adjustment factors. For 1996 through 1992, these factors are: 1.008 for architectural coatings, .989 for product coatings OEM, 1.011 for special purpose coatings and 1.026 for miscellaneous paint products. For 1991, these factors are: 1.00 for architectural coatings, 1.04 for product coatings OEM, 1.06 for special purpose coatings, and 1.16 for miscellaneous paint products. For example, the quantity and value of OEM coatings for 1996 shown in Table 2 amounted to 377,659 and $5,459,536 respectively. Adjusting these figures by the factor of .989 (multiplying 377,659 and $5,459,536 by .989) equals the adjusted and rounded quantity and value of 373.5 and $5,399.5 shown above in Table 1. These factors are used because the annual survey panel was selected to measure approximately 95 percent of the total shipments in the paint industry (SIC 2851). The adjustment factors (based on the 1992 Census of Manufacturers relationships) bring each product class value up to 100 percent. Quarterly figures for 1996 and 1995 reflect the adjusted totals in Table 1 and are shown in Table 3 along with the quarterly figures originally published in Current Industrial Reports quarterly series MQ28F, Paint, Varnish, and Lacquer.
