M33J -- INVENTORIES OF STEEL PRODUCING MILLS Summary 1995 Issued April 23, 1996 Contact person: Ann Truffa (301) 457-4846 SCOPE OF SURVEY-The survey on which this report is based covers producers and steel service centers. Important nonmanufacturing activities, such as construction and mining, are not included. SURVEY METHODOLOGY-Data for producers are based on information collected by mail on Bureau of the Census monthly Form M33J, Net Shipments and Inventories of Steel Mill Shapes and Forms (Producers Report), from companies which produce over 90 percent of total steel output. Estimates have been derived to represent 100 percent coverage of steel producers. These estimates are benchmarked annually to Current Industrial Report Series MA33B, Steel Mill Products, the last being 1994. REVISIONS-Data may be revised as the result of corrected figures from respondents, annual reports received for which imputations were originally made as described, or other corrections. Figures which have been revised by more than 5 percent from previously published figures are indicated by footnotes. HISTORICAL NOTE-Data on inventories of steel mill shapes have been collected by the Bureau of the Census since 1962. Historical data may be obtained from Current Industrial Reports available at your local Federal Depository Library. A list of these libraries may be obtained from the Bureau of the Census regional offices. OBTAINING REPORTS-This report is available electronically through the Census-BEA Electronic Bulletin Board. Net shipments figures are somewhat understated because of the method used to calculate these data. These figures are derived by subtracting total domestic receipts of all mill shapes at producing mills from the total quantity of shipments, plus steel consumed in producing plants. Prior to 1980, import receipts were also used in the net shipments calculation. Beginning in 1980, import receipts of steel mill products for further processing were collected separately and were no longer used in the net shipments calculation. 2/ Source: Bureau of the Census report IM 145, U.S. IMPORTS FOR CONSUMPTION.
