Summary of Findings During 1997, the total value of shipments for communication equipment totaled $74.5 billion, an increase of 13.5 percent from the 1996 value of $65.6 billion. Shipments of telephone switching equipment totaled $10.6 billion, a 10.4-percent increase from the $9.6 billion shipped in 1996. Shipments of carrier line equipment and modems totaled $7.7 billion, an increase of 1.9 percent from the 1996 value of $7.5 billion. Other telephone and telegraph equipment shipped in 1997 totaled $17.8 billion, an increase of 27.2 percent from the $14 billion shipped in 1996. Communications systems and equipment shipped in 1997 totaled $28.5 billion, a 12.7-percent increase from the $25.3 billion shipped in 1996. Shipments of broadcast, studio, and related electronic equipment totaled $3.4 billion in 1997, an 11.7-percent increase from the $3 billion shipped in 1996. Alarm systems totaled $1.9 billion in 1997, a 6.5-percent increase from the $1.8 billion shipped in 1996. Table 1.
