Summary of Findings During 1997, the total value of shipments of selected instruments and related products totaled $71.8 billion, up 4.2 percent from the 1996 value of $68.9 billion. The 1997 figure includes automatic regulating, control, and solenoid valves, $2.6 billion, up 7.4 percent from 1996; search, detection, navigation, guidance, aeronautical, and nautical systems, instruments, and equipment, $29.2 billion, an increase of 3 percent from 1996; laboratory apparatus and furniture, $1.9 billion, up 4.6 percent from 1996; controls for monitoring residential and commercial environments, and appliance regulating controls, $2.7 billion, up 1 percent from 1996; process control instruments, $6.8 billion, unchanged from 1996; fluid meters and counting devices including motor vehicle instruments, $3.7 billion, up 5.7 percent from 1996; test equipment and instruments to measure electricity, $11.9 billion, an increase of 5.2 percent from 1996; analytical and scientific instruments (except optical), $5.9 billion, an increase of 7.7 percent from 1996; optical instruments and lenses, $2.6 billion, an increase of 9 percent from 1996; test equipment, instruments, and measuring and controlling devices, not elsewhere classified (n.e.c.), $4.5 billion, an increase of 6.9 percent from 1996.
