CURRENT INDUSTRIAL REPORTS MQ22D - CONSUMPTION ON THE WOOLEN SYSTEM AND WORSTED COMBING SUMMARY 1994 MQ22D(94)-5 Issued May 15, 1995 Contact: Kay Hanks, 301-457-4620. This survey covers all establishments consuming fibers in woolen spinning and/or producing tops and noils, including commission work on materials owned by others (fibers laid in mixes for commission spinning on the woolen systems, and commission top making). The statistics shown in this publication were collected on Bureau of the Census quarterly Form MQ22D, Consumption of Fibers in Woolen Spinning and Production of Tops and Noils, and Tow to Top, from a panel of approximately 120 establishments accounting for 90 percent of total U.S. consumption on the woolen system and worsted combing. Approx- imately 35 small consumers report annual data only. Quarterly data for these small establishments are estimated based on data reported annually and the trend of those reporting quarterly. Statistics for previous quarters may be revised as the result of corrected data from respondents, including the receipt of late reports for which imputations were made. Figures which have been revised by more than 5 percent from previously published figures are indicated by footnotes. The report is available electronically through the Census-BEA Electronic Bulletin Board, 301-457-2310. Information on accessing the bulletin board can be obtained by calling 301-457-1242. It is also available in CENDATA, the Census Bureau's online information service, through DIALOG Information Services, Inc. (800) 334-2564 and CompuServe (800) 848-8199. Data were received from these companies for 1993; therefore, the information shown for years prior to 1993 may not be directly comparable. These changes represent approximately 4.7 percent of the total fibers consumed on the woolen system and worsted combing. (1) Includes manmade fiber top converted from tow without combing. (2) Data are shown on a scoured basis for greasy wool. (3) Shorn and pulled wool of sheep does not include raw wool consumed in cotton system spinning. These data were withheld to avoid disclosing figures for individual companies. (4) Includes mohair, alpaca, vicuna, and other specialty fibers as well as tops and noils consumed in woolen spinning and mohair consumed in worsted combing. Does not include wool tops consumed in cotton system spinning. (5) Includes cotton, jute, and other vegetable fibers. Data for product code 22993 62, which was included with "Other fibers" data in earlier publications, is now being included in the data for "Noils, reprocessed and reused wool, and other animal fibers." These data represent less than one-half of 1 percent of the total carpet class raw wool. (5) Includes mohair, alpaca, vicuna, and other specialty fibers as well as tops and noils consumed in woolen spinning and mohair and other fibers except wool of sheep consumed in worsted combing. Does not include wool tops consumed in cotton system spinning, which in 1994 amounted to 3,556 thousand pounds and in 1993 amounted to 2,787 thousand pounds.
