Summary of Findings: In 1997, total manufacturers' shipments of paint and allied products amounted to $16,436.8 million, a decrease of 0.7 percent from the 1996 shipments of $16,554.7 million. Shipments of architectural coatings decreased 1.6 percent to $6,148.1 million in 1997 from 6,246.3 million in 1996. Shipments of OEM coatings increased 4.8 percent to $5,739.4 million in 1997 from $5,474.1 million in 1996. Shipments of powder coatings increased 9.6 percent to $589.9 million in 1997 from $538.3 million in 1996. Shipments of special purpose coatings decreased 11.2 percent to $2,898.2 million in 1997 from $3,263.8 million in 1996. Shipments of miscellaneous allied paint products increased 5.1 percent to $1.651.1 million in 1997 from $1,570.5 million in 1996. Table 1. These estimates were developed by increasing the product class totals shown in Table 2 by adjustment factors. For 1997 through 1992, these factors are: 1.008 for architectural coatings, .989 for product coatings OEM, 1.011 for special purpose coatings, and 1.026 for miscellaneous paint products. For example, the quantity and value of OEM coatings for 1997 shown in Table 2 amounted to 429,959 and $5,803,283 respectively. Adjusting these data by the factor of .989 (multiplying 429,959 and $5,803,283 by .989) equals the adjusted and rounded quantity and value of 425.2 and $5,739.4 shown in Table 1. These factors are used because the annual survey panel was selected to measure approximately 95 percent of the total shipments in the paint industry (SIC 2851). The adjustment factors (based on the 1992 Census of Manufactures' relationships) bring each product class value up to 100 percent. Quarterly data for 1997 and 1996 reflect the adjusted totals in Table 1 are shown in Table 3 along with the quarterly data orginally published in the Current Industrial Reports quarterly series MQ28F, Paint, Varnish, and Lacquer.
