Summary of findings: Production of lumber in the United States amounted to 47.3 billion board feet in 1997, 5.7 percent above the 1996 level of 44.8 billion board feet. Eastern lumber production was 29.4 billion board feet in 1997, 4.6 percent above the 1996 level of 28.2 billion board feet. Southern yellow pine production amounted to 15.7 billion board feet in 1997, a 4.5 percent increase from the 15.1 billion board feet in 1996. Production of eastern hardwoods, 10.7 billion board feet in 1997, was 4.2 percent above the 1996 level of 10.2 billion board feet. Western lumber production was 17.9 billion board feet in 1997 an increase of 7.7 percent from the 1996 production level of 16.6 billion board feet. Production of western softwoods increased by 7.7 percent to 17.4 billion board feet from 1997 to 1996. Total western hardwood production increased by 5.1 percent. Table 1.
