Circle 013: John Hume, Peace in Northern Ireland, November 26, 1978

Permanent URI for this collection

John Hume, leader of the non-violent Catholic peace cause in Northern Ireland, was feeling a bit like his own Bishop of Derry as he sat in an upholstered velour chair and explained the trouble back home.

This evening with the New England Circle was steeped in purpose: Hume's homeland may have a hard road to peace but the journey can be aided by Erin's Yankee cousins.

The deputy leader of the Democratic Labor Party said the formation of the group, New Ireland, will channel information to Americans and dollars to Northern Ireland.

Ending the terror of a decade that has claimed 1,800 lives and injured another 20,000 requires an effort by Britain to bring both sides together, said Hume, declaring this has to be done before any withdrawal of British troops.
