When spying began at the beginning of the Revolution it was unorganized and ineffective. After several failed espionage attempts at the beginning of the Revolution, General George Washington realized he needed to recruit spies who were going to be efficient and able to gather Intel to win the war. The use of women as agents, slaves, and civilian spies would be the key to gathering intelligence. Gender and racial roles transformed societal norms and the world of espionage during the Revolution which altered the white male dominated military culture of Intelligence. George Washington requested Major Benjamin Tallmadge of the Continental Army to organize a spy network in 1778, three years after the war began. The Culper Ring was made up of a group of American settlers. The group was made up of agents and subagents which included a farmer, a homemaker, a merchant, and a slave. The Northern Campaign Culper agents lived in Setauket, New York about sixty-three miles from Manhattan, New York. Manhattan was the British Army and Navy headquarters during the war. The Culper Spies where to move between Setauket and Manhattan to gather Intel from the British Army. Other agents were in Virginia and South Carolina which was the Southern Campaign of the Revolution. As multiple battles were being fought these patriotic agents worked feverishly to attain secrets from the British to win the war. Due to the efforts of the spies who volunteered to be part of the Culper Spy Ring the world of espionage was dramatically transformed in the latter years of the Revolution.
