Born in Passaic, New Jersey, Clifford Smith received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. In 1979, Smith obtained a Teaching Assistantship from the University of Massachusetts and was awarded a New Hampshire Arts Council Fellowship in 2000. Most well-known for his large scale landscapes and seascapes, Smith spent his career working as a realist painter. Crafting his compositions through the careful layering and patterning of numerous brushstrokes, Smith played with the viewer’s perception. At first what appears as a photographic image reveals itself as complete abstraction (or the patterning of brushstrokes) when viewed up close. Smith’s influences included Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Gerhard Richter. His works can be found in the collections of Yale University, New Haven, CT; American Stock Exchange, New York and the Illinois Bell Telephone, Chicago, IL.Item Body image #9Prince, DougAn image of the artist's body created by placing the body directly on photosensitive paper after having to smear his skin with vaseline to create a photoresist surface. The play of company logos and graffiti pieces on canvas highlight the color relationships, and the variety of patterns, and textures found in both streamline worlds of graphic design and graffiti. O'Neill often paints seldom frequented urban areas. “There’s a certain kind of atmosphere that pervades into discarded, or out of reach places,” says O’Neill. Using an extended perspective and without figures, he creates his own hyper-reality. O’Neill’s deep knowledge of his subject and acute attention to detail bring these paintings to life, evoking a sense of awe and passion.
