Abstract
The following application for the National Endowment for the Humanities Public Programs grant will explain the intention behind planning The Peculiar Institution: Religion, Politics, and Geography, a temporary exhibit to be held at the Kentucky Historical Society. Presently, museums and historic sites across the state of Kentucky, including the Kentucky Historical Society, lack an in-depth discussion on the complexities of slavery across the state, particularly concerning the three terms of religion, politics, and geography. Using the staff and archives located at the Kentucky Historical Society along with carefully hired consultants, The Peculiar Institution: Religion, Politics, and Geography will use vivid imagery, specially theme-specific artifacts, and descriptions to delicately present an underdiscussed and sensitive topic to the public.
