| dc.description.abstract | The research study was conducted in Hanansif area in Kinondoni municipality, in order to assess the level and limitation of community participation in solid waste management services. The results of the study was envisaged to assist KIWODET, a CBO providing solid waste collection services in the area, to formulate a workable strategy that could improve and facilitate sustainable provision of solid waste management services. A cross section survey design was adopted, a structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The sample size was 5 percent of the target population of head of households residing in Hanansif area. The respondents were selected at random. The study results indicated that community members were less aware of the existence and activities of the CBO in the area. However they acknowledged that, lack of knowledge and education on health consequences of poor environmental management, as well as poor enforcement of by-laws governing solid waste management in the area have largely contributed to low community participation. It was therefore recommended that, KIWODET should develop a community sensitization and awareness programmed to address the issues and facilitate increased community participation in environmental management. In implementation of the recommendations, a project proposal for community sensitization and awareness programmed was finally developed to assist KIWODET mobilize funds to implement the programmed.
