| dc.description.abstract | Clifford Smith, American, 1951-2014. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, Clifford Smith received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. In 1979, Smith obtained a Teaching Assistantship from the University of Massachusetts and was awarded a New Hampshire Arts Council Fellowship in 2000. Most well-known for his large scale landscapes and seascapes, Smith spent his career working as a realist painter. Crafting his compositions through the careful layering and patterning of numerous brushstrokes, Smith played with the viewer’s perception. At first what appears as a photographic image reveals itself as complete abstraction (or the patterning of brushstrokes) when viewed up close. Smith’s influences included Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Gerhard Richter. His works can be found in the collections of Yale University, New Haven, CT; American Stock Exchange, New York and the Illinois Bell Telephone, Chicago, IL. | |
