Abstract

This research reports the activities of Arusha Community Based Rehabilitation Support Unit, a local Community Based organization which aim at improving the living condition of people with different kinds of disabilities in Arusha region. The study findings reveal that so far the organization is has played a significant role in raising awareness about the needs and rights of people with disabilities in the community. As a result to this, community leaders, parents of children with disabilities and people with disabilities have been stimulated to work tirelessly to address the needs of people with disabilities in their communities. People with disabilities have received different services such as rehabilitation and referrals to different social services which in turn have improved their living condition. The results also show that the local NGOs , CBO and government authorities have played a significant role in supporting this initiative in addressing needs such as healthcare and education, just to name few, which could not be offered by this project to people with different kinds of disabilities.Despite the good progress made by this project and other organizations working with the communities to address their community needs, there is an urgent need for more support from Government and other stakeholders in order to mobilize resources which could address different needs of people with disabilities and community at large in the operational area. This is because Arusha CBR Support Unit perceives disability as a dimension of diversity which needs to be addressed from different angles; socially, economically, culturally and physiologically just to name few aspects.
